Nervous candidates may be reading the press and viewing the TV news and deciding it's "better the devil you know" and consequently putting their job search on hold until it's more certain as to what the future holds for the economy.
In this climate, there is even more reason to work hard on placing immediately available candidates.
When I was working a perm desk I always paid special attention to my immediately available candidates. Although they may not have all been A1 candidates, they were…

Whether you are a management professional, chef, engineer or jewelery designer, each one of us is lured to fake our resume to get the dream job. Some people call it “absolutely unethical”, whereas some people feel that is “fine” to fake one’s resume.
When we graduate, we are on a warpath, ready to take up the challenges and face the world with whatever we have. But when reality bites, the picture seems a lot more different and we are willing to do whatever it takes to make things work. There co…

There are dozens if not hundreds of
green job boards filling the spaces in the online recruitment landscape. Every blogger and his mother seems to have one attached to their site touting it as the place to post your
eco friendly postings. The problem is these green sites are not focused enough.
A ‘
green job’ is a relative term and many types of jobs can be green. So if yo…

I'll be the first to admit publicly that If I can't recognize the number that magically appears on my caller ID, I won't answer the phone. And I don't feel guilty about it.
I think I've become sort of like "rain man" with area codes and it's getting a little freaky. Making a game of gu…

Until about 6 months ago, I had the best recruitment job in the world !
Seriously. CEO of a global, yet niche recruiter, with 450 staff spread across 30 offices in 15 countries. We dominate our space in most markets, we are highly profitable, and we do cool things all the time (see Aquent.com)
But that was then. For the last six months I have had one of the hardest, least rewarding jobs in recruitment (well that’s a hotly contested title I know, but it seems that way to me)!. Like everyone els…

I’m exhausted. Today, I received nearly 100 invitations through LinkedIn to join groups ranging from increasing sales to in-home cooking lessons. I have nobody to blame, but myself. Like a moth drawn to light, I was blinded by the sexiness of growing my network.
You see, I used to be a conservative Linker, who only accept/extended invites from people I knew, had previously worked with, and/or attempted to hire. In the glitz and glamour of it all, I joined that dreaded TopLinked site and like ma…

For most people there is a break in their employment history where they have taken time off. This could be for any reason from returning to school, taking care of an ill relative, starting a family, to taking an extended trip to Africa. For many potential employers this is not a "deal…

admit it – I’m a sucker for bright shiny new technology. In fact, I’m susceptible enough that I spend a good deal of time being very critical of anything new. Why? (a) I’m weak, and (b) a lot of this stuff just disappears and you can’t remember why you liked it in the first place.
And how is this relevant to job boards and careers site? Well…almost every couple of weeks I am approached by another vendor with a ‘killer’ tool that integrates into an existing site and will drive up revenues – or I…

With the help of packer and movers companies shifting to new location has become much easier and comfortable. … and not the fire and brimstone kind! A Job Revolution that is caused by the chaos we have all been dealing with whether you have a job now or not, it’s the kind of revolution that causes change. Are you ready to take action, make a change and engage in a Job Revolution?
In order to embrace a Job Revolution, we must be ready and willing to change. Sometimes it’s ok to stir things up and become a “Career Rebel” as one woman put it. The process begins and ends with you. It’s your choice how you’…

Being an entrepreneur is in the forefront of the minds of the Y. They want freedom, power and control. I assured them they would have all of this if they were also proactive, tenacious and willing to do the work.
I spoke on Saturday to a group of professors, students, and HR leaders /mentors about careers in and around HR. As always I was passionate and engaging with the audience. What they did not know they'd get that they did was a powerful dose of ‘pursue your passions’ and what you think yo…

As a recruiter with 20+ years of experience I’ve heard the phrase “no thanks I’m very happy where I am at now” more times than I can count, and as recruiters all the world over know this is the equivalent to the brush off “no thanks….I’m just looking” that many of us use with retail sales people. However, what I’m finding as I recruit now is that that very few (and I mean VERY FEW) people bother with such comments as more now prefer to get more details about the job/career path/projects/location…
